Just as this mysterious noise begins, so suddenly it can also cease. In rare cases the sound could remain. Patients describe it as a continuous non-rhythmical clicking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">Clicking noise in the ear should not be associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/en\/neuro-otology\/neurophysiology-of-tinnitus\/\">tinnitus<\/a>. In contrast, an irregular clicking noise in the ear is almost always due to muscle spasms, just as in &#8220;blinking&#8221; or &#8220;facial twitching.&#8221; Thus, instead of being able to &#8220;see&#8221; the contraction with the eyes, one hears the contraction since the muscles are around the ear or in the ear itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_most_common_causes_of_contractions_are\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">The most common causes of contractions are:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 18pt;\">Myoclonus of the Palate:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">This is a rare\u00a0 disorder characterized by continuous rhythmic movements of the soft palate. The rhythmic movements have a frequency of 1-2 Hz and are accompanied by a rhythmic sound or &#8220;clicking&#8221;. It can be caused by two factors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Damage to the area of the brain in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pn.bmj.com\/content\/16\/3\/243\">Guillain-Mollaret triangle<\/a>. In this case, rhythmic contractions are also observed in other muscle groups such as the larynx, tongue, face and diaphragm. The existence of this damage is usually due to neurodegenerative or demyelinating diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Functional psychogenic factors.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_9357\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9357\" class=\"wp-image-9357 size-medium\" title=\"Irregular ear Clicking.ent\" src=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/%CE%B8%CF%8C%CF%81%CF%85%CE%B2%CE%BF%CF%82-%CF%83%CF%84%CE%BF-%CE%B1%CF%85%CF%84%CE%AF.ent_-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"Irregular ear Clicking.ent\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Irregular ear Clicking due to Palatal Myoclonus<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">The palatal myoclonus can be diagnosed by simple pharyngoscopy or endoscopy with visible &#8220;spasms&#8221; of the soft palate that appear over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">The ability to hear the contraction exists because the muscles of the soft palate extend to the ear via the Eustachian tube.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatment_of_Irregular_ear_Clicking\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">Treatment of Irregular ear Clicking<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">The treatment of palatal myoclonus\u00a0 is carried out by injecting Clostridium botulinum (Botox) into the muscles that are contracting. The results are temporary, therefore, treatment should be repeated every 6-12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Middle ear myoclonus<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> (stapedius or\u00a0the tensor tympani\u00a0muscle):<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">In this extremely rare condition,muscles of the middle ear can go into spasms and contract rhythmically, therefore you will hear a \u201cbutterfly fluttering\u201d type of sound.
