People can also experience a reduced ability to taste sweet, sour, bitter, salty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_causes_them\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">What causes them?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Upper respiratory and middle ear infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Radiation therapy for cancers of the head and neck<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Exposure to certain chemicals, such as insecticides and some medications, including some common antibiotics and antihistamines<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Head injury<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Some surgeries to the ear, nose, and throat (such as middle ear surgery) or extraction of the third molar (wisdom to<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11711 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/%CE%BA%CF%81%CF%85%CE%BF%CE%BB%CF%8C%CE%B3%CE%B7%CE%BC.%CE%B5%CF%85%CE%AF%CE%B1%CF%83%CE%B9%CF%82-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>oth)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Poor oral hygiene and dental problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_are_taste_disorders_diagnosed\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">How are taste disorders diagnosed?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">Both taste and smell disorders are diagnosed by an <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/en\/dr-christina-efthymiou\/\">otolaryngologist<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">An accurate assessment of your taste loss will include, among other things, a physical examination of your ears, nose, and throat; a dental examination and assessment of oral hygiene; a review of your health history; and a taste test supervised by a health care professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_they_be_treated\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">Can they be treated?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Occasionally, a person may recover his or her sense of taste spontaneously. Proper oral hygiene is important to regaining and maintaining a well-functioning sense of taste.
