Opioid analgesics are commonly used to treat postoperative pain; however, these drugs are associated with a number of undesirable side effects. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11460\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11460\" class=\"wp-image-11460 size-medium\" title=\"Acupuncture for Postoperative Pain.ent\" src=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/%CF%8E%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%B3%CE%AF%CE%B1.ent_-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"Acupuncture for Postoperative Pain.ent\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Acupuncture for Postoperative Pain<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Research indicates that certain modes of <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/en\/acupuncture\/\">acupuncture<\/a> improves postoperative pain after surgery and reduces opioid use. These findings support the use of acupuncture as an adjuvant therapy in treating postoperative pain. Acupuncture is a\u00a0comprehensive therapeutic intervention, which targets the person as a whole and not just the symptom.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Evidence_of_how_Acupuncture_Works_in_Alleviating_Postoperative_Pain\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 18pt;\">Evidence of how Acupuncture Works in Alleviating Postoperative Pain:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Electro-acupuncture stimulates the release of \u03b2-endorphin, encephalin, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/neuroscience\/endomorphin\">endomorphin<\/a>, which in turn activates the \u03bc- and \u03b4-opioid receptors, key receptor sites in the management of acute, chronic, and neuropathic pain [1].<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">High-frequency stimulation (100-200 Hz) provides rapid-onset analgesia that does not appear to be blocked by naloxone (a \u03bc-opioid antagonist), suggesting it may be mediated by norepinephrine, serotonin, and dynorphins [2].<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Low-frequency (2-4 Hz) and medium-frequency stimulation (15-30 Hz) appear to produce an analgesic effect that is reversed by naloxone, suggesting it is mediated by encephalins and endorphins [2,3].
