For some individuals, PPPD can cause chronic dizziness following an acute bout of dizziness or <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/en\/vertigo-dizziness\/vertigo-stop-the-room-from-spinning\/\">vertigo<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness was previously known as Chronic Subjective Dizziness (CSD) and was given as a diagnosis when a patient experienced dizziness symptoms without any positive objective tests for a condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">It is now seen as the most common vestibular condition affecting people in the 30-50 age group and the second most common diagnosis for all vestibular patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_causes_this_Condition\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">What causes this Condition?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Patients most often develop PPPD following an insult or injury to the balance system (such as vestibular migraine, vestibular neuritis, or BPPV), a medical issue (such as a severe episode of low blood pressure causing dizziness), or trauma (both physical or psychological).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_of_PPPD\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">Symptoms of PPPD<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_10586\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10586\" class=\"wp-image-10586 size-medium\" title=\"PPPD Persistant Postural Dizziness.Eviasis\" src=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/%CE%96%CE%AC%CE%BB%CE%B7.ent_-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"PPPD Persistant Postural Dizziness.Eviasis\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10586\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PPPD Persistant Postural Dizziness<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Patients with PPPD often describe a sense of internal motion (even without objective movement of the body), akin to a feeling of \u2018rocking or swaying as if on a boat\u2019, a sense of unsteadiness, vibrations inside the body, and walking \u2018as if drunk\u2019. Symptoms tend to be worse in busy or visually rich environments but can also persist even when the patient is lying in bed at night. There may be accompanying symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, short-term memory loss, and a sensation of derealisation (feeling detached from the world) or depersonalisation (feeling detached from oneself).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">One of the most frustrating aspects of PPPD for patients is that others cannot see the problem, and so often patients report feeling \u2018mis-understood\u2019 by friends, family, or work colleagues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatment_of_PPPD\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">Treatment of PPPD<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10590 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BA%CF%81%CE%BF%CE%B6%CF%89%CE%AF%CE%B1.ent_-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Since PPPD is complex and is influenced by many different factors, treatment must be tailored to the individual and typically requires several different interventions to make meaningful, long lasting change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Once the diagnosis is made, the first step in treatment is for the patient to understand what causes PPPD\u00a0and how the brain misinterprets normal balance stimuli as a threat. Knowing what is happening will help patients feel better and motivate them to be more actively involved in their treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Treatment for PPPD involves &#8220;retraining&#8221; the brain.
