Disorders of this joint can cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">The exact cause of TMJ disorders is often difficult to determine. Your pain may be due to a combination of factors, such as genetics, arthritis or jaw injury. Some people who have jaw pain also tend to clench or grind their teeth (bruxism), although many people habitually clench or grind their teeth and never develop TMJ disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_Signs_and_symptoms_of_TMJ_disorders_may_include\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 18pt;\">Symptoms<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 18pt;\">Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Pain or tenderness of the jaw<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Aching pain in and around the ear<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Aching facial pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close the mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">TMJ disorders can also cause a clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnosis\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">Diagnosis<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">Your doctor will discuss your symptoms and examine your jaw.
