Most VRT exercises involve head movement, and head movements are essential in stimulating and retraining the vestibular system.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5137 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/%CE%B6%CE%AC%CE%BB%CE%B7-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Vestibular rehabilitation therapy has been a highly effective modality for most adults and children with disorders of the vestibular or central balance system. Specifically designed VRT exercise protocols take advantage of this plasticity of the brain to increase sensitivity and restore symmetry. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"This_results_in_an_improvement_in\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 18pt;\">This results in an improvement in:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\"> vestibulo-ocular control, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">an increase in the gain of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">better postural strategies, and <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">increased levels of motor control for movement. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Other factors that affect the degree of individual compensation include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\"> overall physical status, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">the functional status of remaining sensory systems, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">integrity of central brain mechanisms, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">age, and <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">higher sensory functions such as memory, motor coordination, and cognitive ability.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">The process of compensation depends on various mechanisms, including substitution strategies, prediction strategies, and cognitive strategies. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Components of VRT may involve learning how to trigger the symptoms in order to \u201ddesensitize\u201d the vestibular system (habituation):<\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\"> for positional or motion-provoked symptoms, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">adapting to improve the gain of the vestibulo-ocular or the vestibulospinal reflexes, and <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">substituting alternative senses to replace lost vestibular function by biasing use away from the dysfunctional vestibular input. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">When combined, this results in a progressive waning of symptoms of imbalance, disequilibrium, and motion-induced unsteadiness. <\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;
