The facial nerve is the main nerve that innervates the muscles of the face and therefore enables facial expression.<\/span><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Facial_Nerve_paralysis_is_almost_always_caused_by\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Facial Nerve paralysis is almost always caused by:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Damage or swelling of the facial nerve, which carries signals from the brain to the muscles of the face<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Damage to the area of the brain that sends signals to the muscles of the face<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Fortunately, 85% of facial palsy is due to idiopathic palsy<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">(Bell&#8217;s Palsy). The etiology remains unclear although viral infections have been implicated and it occurs more frequently in pregnant women. The diagnosis of idiopathic paralysis is made by excluding all other causes. Healing occurs automatically within 6 months and usually no neurological signs remain.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Permanent_paralysis_is_primarily_due_to\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">Permanent paralysis is primarily due to:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">Injuries and fractures of the temporal bone<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Large facial traumas<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Tumors (neurofibromas, cholesteatomas, brain tumors, tumors \u00a0of the parotid gland, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Autoimmune diseases<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Metabolic diseases<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">Symptoms<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">Sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face\u00a0that causes it to droop. This is the main symptom.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">It may make it hard for you to close the eye on that side of the face.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">Drooling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">Eye problems, such as excessive tearing or a dry eye.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">Loss of ability to taste.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">Pain in or behind the ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">Numbness in the affected side of the face.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/%cf%84%ce%bf-%ce%b1%cf%85%cf%84%ce%b9\/%ce%b3%ce%b9%ce%b1%cf%84%ce%af-%ce%b5%ce%af%ce%bd%ce%b1%ce%b9-%ce%ba%ce%ac%cf%80%ce%bf%ce%b9%ce%bf%ce%b9-%ce%ae%cf%87%ce%bf%ce%b9-%ce%b1%cf%86%cf%8c%cf%81%ce%b7%cf%84%ce%b1-%ce%b4%cf%85%ce%bd%ce%b1\/\">Increased sensitivity to sound<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatment_of_Facial_Nerve_Paralysis\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: verdana, geneva;\">Treatment of\u00a0Facial Nerve Paralysis<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_11360\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11360\" class=\"wp-image-11360 size-medium\" title=\"Acupuncture for Facial Nerve Paralysis.ent\" src=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/%CF%80%CF%81%CE%BF%CF%83%CF%89%CF%80%CE%BF.%CE%B2%CE%B5%CE%BB%CE%BF%CE%BD%CE%B9%CF%83%CE%BC%CF%8C.eviasis-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Acupuncture for Facial Nerve Paralysis.ent\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Acupuncture for Facial Nerve Paralysis<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica;\">For treatment to be effective it should be started immediately or at the latest within the first three days of symptoms.\u00a0Treatment includes medication and physical therapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Clinical studies show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.satory.gr\/en\/page-medical-acupuncture\/\">acupuncture<\/a> is very effective in treating facial paralysis, without the serious side effects of the cortosteroid therapy used in Western medicine. The acupuncture treatment protocol essentially returns the face back to normal in one-third of the time of any other treatment.
