We delight in the aromas of our favorite foods or the fragrance of flowers. Our sense of smell also is a warning system, alerting us to danger signals such as a gas leak, spoiled food, or a fire. Any loss in our sense of smell can have a negative effect on our quality of life. It also can be a sign of more serious health problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Loss of smell (anosmia) can be partial or complete, although a complete loss of smell is fairly rare. Loss of smell can also be temporary or permanent, depending on the cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causes_of_Loss_of_Smell\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 18pt;\">Causes of Loss of Smell<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Nasal congestion\u00a0from a cold, allergy,\u00a0sinus infection, or poor air quality is the most common cause of anosmia.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3334 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ent.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"195\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Other causes include:<\/span><\/div>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Nasal polyps<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Injury to the nose\u00a0and smell nerves from surgery or head trauma.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Exposure to toxic chemicals, such as pesticides or solvents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Certain medications, including antibiotics, antidepressants, anti-inflammatory medication, heart medications, and others.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Cocaine abuse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Old age.\u00a0Like vision and hearing, your sense of smell can become weaker as you age. In fact, one&#8217;s sense of smell is most keen between the ages of 30 and 60 and begins to decline after age 60.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Certain medical conditions, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.satory.gr\/en\/acupuncture-neurological-diseases\/infrared-light-therapy-might-aid-in-alzheimers-disease\/\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease,\u00a0Parkinson&#8217;s disease,\u00a0multiple sclerosis,<\/a> nutritional deficiencies, congenital conditions, and hormonal disturbances.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Radiation treatment\u00a0of head and neck cancers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnosis\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 18pt;\">Diagnosis<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">It is important to identify and treat the underlying cause of a potential smell disorder. An accurate assessment of a smell disorder will include, among other things,<\/span><\/div>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">physical examination of the ears, nose, and throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">review of your health history, such as exposure to toxic chemicals or injury, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">smell test<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">CT scan may be necessary for further information<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatments\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 18pt;\">Treatments\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">If nasal congestion from a cold or allergy\u00a0is the cause of anosmia, treatment is usually not needed, and the problem will resolve automatically.
