Nose-bleeds can occur at any age but are most common in children aged 2 to 10 years and adults aged 50 to 80 years.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Nose-bleeds can be dramatic and frightening.\u00a0Luckily, most nose-bleeds are not serious and can be handled fairly easily. They are divided into two types, depending on whether the bleeding is coming from the anterior (front of the nose) or posterior (back) of the nose.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Anterior nosebleeds make up more than 90% of all nosebleeds. The bleeding usually comes from a blood vessel at the very front part of the nose. Anterior nosebleeds are usually easy to control, either by measures that can be performed at home or by a doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Posterior nosebleeds are much less common\u00a0than anterior nosebleeds. They tend to occur more often in elderly people. The bleeding usually comes from an artery in the back part of the nose. These nosebleeds are more complicated and usually require admission to the hospital and management by an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose, and throat specialist).<\/span><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causes_of_Nose-Bleeds\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">Causes of Nose-Bleeds<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.satory.gr\/en\/acupuncture-upper-and-lower-respiratory-infections\/allergic-rhinitis-managed-with-acupuncture\/\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Allergic rhinitis<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">An object stuck in the nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Barotrauma<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Blowing the nose very hard<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Chemical irritants<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Direct injury to nose, including a broken nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Nose picking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Overuse of decongestant nasal sprays<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10692 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/%CE%95%CF%80%CE%AF%CF%83%CF%84%CE%B1%CE%BE%CE%B7-%CF%81%CE%B9%CE%BD%CF%8C%CF%82.ent_-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Repeated sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Surgery on the face or nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Taking large doses of aspirin or blood-thinning medicine<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Upper respiratory infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Very cold or very dry air<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Repeated nosebleeds may be a symptom of another disease such as high blood pressure, <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.gr\/en\/allergy\/\">allergies<\/a>, a bleeding disorder, or a tumor of the nose or sinuses<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatment\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">Treatment<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Home treatment for Nosebleeds\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">A small amount of bleeding from a nosebleed requires little intervention.<\/span><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"To_stop_a_nosebleed\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">To stop a nosebleed:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Remain calm.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Sit up straight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Lean your head forward. Tilting your head back will only cause you to swallow the blood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Pinch the nostrils together with your thumb and index finger for 10 minutes. Have someone time you to make sure you do not release the nostrils any earlier.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Spit out any blood in your mouth. Swallowing it may make you vomit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">After the bleeding has stopped<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Try to prevent any irritation to the nose, such as sneezing or nose blowing, for 24 hours.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Ice packs may help.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Exposure to dry air, such as in a heated home in the winter, can contribute to the problem.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14pt;\">Adding moisture to the air with a humidifier or vaporizer will help keep the nose from drying out and triggering more bleeding.
